v    Purpose of the project:

*      Replace some of the old digital telephone exchanges of Dhaka City.

*      Avoid using copper cable as much as possible and extend fibre optic cable up to the customer premises i.e. building or even to the home (FTTB or FTTH). Optical fibre is less costly than that of copper cable and its maintenance is easy with less chance of stolen/disturbed by other service providers. Optical fibre offers a huge bandwidth with which BTCL will be able to offer voice, video and data service (Internet) simultaneously with a single pair of cable.

Introduce NGN (Next Generation Network)  based  architecture to facilitate IP (Internet Protocol) based node/end user identification  with QoS (Quality of Service) enabled, which means customer will enjoy  services “ as you pay” basis : better services at an affordable price . It is possible for the customer to achieve more value for their money with graded service quality: pay more for better service.

v     Within the scope of the project BTCL has taken plan to install:

*     Two Soft Switches to be operated at hot standby mode, one to be  installed at  Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Telephone Exchange building  and another at Ramna Telephone Exchange building, Dhaka. Soft Switch acts as the Media Gateway Controller.

*     Seven Trunk Gateways (TGWs) at SB Nagar, Ramna, Nilkhet,Moghbazar, Gulshan, Mirpur and Uttara Telephone Exchange Buildings. TGWs will be used to connect with other existing or forthcoming digital exchanges (circuit switched or packet switched).

*     188 (one hundred and eighty eight) Access Gateway (AGW) will be installed in different places of Dhaka city of different equipped capacities. AGWs will be used to connect customers and be located near to the customer’s premises.

*     7(Seven) GPON OLTE (Gigabit Passive Optical Network, Optical Line Terminating Equipment) one per TGW site. GPON OLTEs will be used to extend FTTH or FTTB facility.
